"Jesus H. Christ. How did she do that?" Tom cried. He could not believe that anyone could simply disappear in thin air like that.

Mephistophiles sat on the floor staring at him. The cat's voice was in his head again. She has magical powers. She has entered the dimension where your beloved is held captive.

It was too much. Tom went to the liquor cabinet and poured a half of a glass of bourbon. He swallowed the alcohol in two gulps. He turned to the cat. "How long will she be gone?"

Not long. Be patient.

This is nutsy, thought Tom. Here I am talking to a cat again. He went upstairs to see what Bridget was doing. She was laying on the bed, fully clothed. He put his head down on her chest. Her breathing was so shallow that at first Tom feared that she had died. He felt her pulse. It was slow, but even. He felt her head. It was cool. He sat next to the bed with her hand in his and prayed that she would be okay and return to her normal self.

A long time past. As the hands on the alarm clock came together at midnight, Tom began to nod. Suddenly he felt Bridget's fingers move. When he gazed into her face, her eyes opened. She smiled. "Tom. What happened?"

He hugged her, tears flowing down his cheeks, too overwhelmed with emotion to reply to her.

She sat up. "I must've passed out gazing at that crystal. Did you carry me up here?" She looked down at the black jeans and tank top that she was wearing. "Why am I dressed like this?"

Tom said, "You don't remember anything after you went into a trance?"

"No. Except for terrible nightmares, but they're starting to fade."

"You were possessed by a demon named Esmeralda."

"Possessed? Oh God, this awful house. We've got to leave."

Tom grinned. This was the old Bridget for sure. "Maybe you're right. I'll tell the Elluls that we can't finish the project."

"Why don't we wait until after Christmas?"

"Christmas is over. It's almost New Years Eve."

"I've been possessed that long? It's like more than a week carved out of my life, as though I was in a coma. Did Father Winters do a exorcism?"

"No. It was Morgaine, the psychic, who saved you."

As though the mention of her name made her appear, Morgaine appeared by the doorway. "Everything okay now?"

"Yes. Thank you," Bridget replied. "You know, it's strange, but you were in my nightmare. You told me that you were going to rescue me from the awful creature who had me chained up. Oh God, I remember now. Terrible, unspeakable things happened to me in that dream." She began to weep.

Tom placed her arms around her. "It's all over darling. We'll move out of this house tomorrow."

Morgaine said, "You can't do that. Not yet."

Tom turned to her. "Look Morgaine. We're grateful. But you've gotten everything you wanted. Leave us in peace."

"Not quite everything." She made magical passes in the air, and the two people went into a trance.
